Store hours are 10:30 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday
And 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday

The Main Street Store (MSS) is a unique business operating on Main Street in Albion, in the heart of the downtown historic district. The Store offers a variety of services and educational opportunities designed to support and help maintain Self-Sufficiency.

The MSS THRIFT SHOPPE is dedicated to offering high quality gently used or new clothing, household items, and furniture at affordable prices. Clothing, shoes, and accessories are donated from as far away as New York City, Philadelphia, and Florida. The MSS VILLAGE THRIFT SHOPPE specializes in quality work and school apparel. When all apparel reaches the retail floor it has been cleaned, sanitized, checked for quality. Every penny of the income from the THRIFT SHOPPE supports the MSS Employment and Education services available to all community residents.

TECH N TIME FREE COMMUNITY COMPUTERS are internet accessible and available to the community. There is usually someone at the store to answer basic computer operation questions, and, if requested, a tutor may be scheduled to provide COMPUTER INSTRUCTION for a modest fee.

By joining the DRESS FOR SUCCESS CLUB, customers receive a 30% discount on clothing for their job. To join just come in and ask for details. Career wear clothing is always on sale to DRESS FOR SUCCESS CLUB MEMBERS!!!!!

The MSS BOOK EXCHANGE boasts a large selection of FREE books for adults and children alike. When customers are finished, they often return the books in exchange for a new selection. We encourage children to browse through the library and let them know they are welcomed to take any and all they find interesting, as reading is the foundation for success.

The RETAIL TRAINING PROGRAM provides the opportunity for unemployed workers to hone up on their retail skills and have a current reference when seeking employment. Everything from customer service to stockroom is covered. Many people completing the RETAIL TRAINING PROGRAM have found wonderful jobs. Anyone in the community wishing to gain retail experience may volunteer at the store, as well as those working through Community Agency Referrals.

WOMEN’S SELF SUFFICIENCY SERVICES focus on individual needs of women for living an independent and stable life. This project is open to all women in the community looking for ways to increase their self-sufficiency status. Customers meet one-on-one with mentors and create a plan for reaching that goal. TUTORING SERVICES The Main Street Store is an alternative learning site for the Albion Central Schools, providing small group and one-on-one instruction to students scheduled for sessions at the store.

Secondly, TUTORING SERVICES are available for middle, high school, GED and college level studies by appointment and for a modest fee EMPLOYMENT READINESS AND JOB SEARCHING PROGRAMS Three-Week Workshops are held monthly under contract with the Department of Social Services and working directly with Orleans County Job Development. These workshops guide students toward employment by developing resumes and cover letters, practicing interviewing, and offering insight in to the world of successful employment. Behaviors, work ethics, etiquette and more are addressed. Students receive direct guidance when applying for jobs and attend real interviews with the intent of successfully obtaining employment.

MONEY MANAGEMENT/PERSONAL BUDGETING Individual and off-site group money-management instruction. Learning how to create a personal 18-week income/expense schedule is the focus of this service. One-on-one sessions are offered as well as group workshops serving community organizations.

RESUMES, COVER LETTERS and INTERVIEW SKILLS – by appointment. An employment specialist works hand in hand with customers to develop a unique resume and cover letter, increasing the chances for successfully obtaining employment. If requested, the specialist and customer practice mock interviews until the customer is confident about attending an interview. Follow up service is available.

EMPLOYMENT REFERRAL SERVICE This service matches potential employers with unemployed people searching for work. Customers complete a Job Readiness Workshop and create a personal portfolio containing well-documented work history, skills assessment, availability for employment, and special needs. When an employer wants to hire, they call The Main Street Store and request a list of job seekers meeting their requirements, helping to expedite the hiring process.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION RESOURCE AND ADVOCACYThe Main Street Store is a valuable community information resource. Anyone can walk in and ask for information or help on topics from A to Z. From understanding a form that needs to be filled out, to finding directions, to talking over a concern, the staff at the store is always willing to be of assistance.
